It’s that time again, folks. Time for Friday’s Fave Five! I actually woke up thinking about what I was going to write about this morning. Of course, by the time I made it downstairs, I’d forgotten half of what I’d thought about. But hey! Let’s take a different tack. I REMEMBERED half of what I had thought of during the night. Wunderbar! Here they are……

Coffee just seems to taste better in a bookstore. Why is that? I’m thinking it might be because of all the pleasant associations I make with being in a bookstore. There is nothing quite like sipping a strong bit of caffeinated brew while listening to the bits of conversation going on around you while you leaf through magazines trying to decide whether or not you really need to buy them, all the while anticipating heading out into the stacks of books to see what gems await you.

The “Law of Diminishing Returns” is one of the most useful things I learned in school. I forget which class or teacher told us about this law but I have never forgotten it. Perhaps this is because the prof used hot fudge sundaes in the example he gave us. To put it in simple terms, let’s say you LOVE hot fudge sundaes. So you go out and eat one. It tastes great! You order another one. This one tastes pretty good, too. You decide to order another one. This one is OK but not quite as good as the last one. You’re still a glutton so you order another one. By now, the 4th hot fudge sundae is not giving you much pleasure. In fact, it is making you feel rather sick. My friend, you’ve just experienced the “Law of Diminishing Returns.”

Some children only seem to want to cuddle when they feel sick. I have two children. One is a natural cuddler. One has never liked to cuddle or be hugged at all. Nada! The only time she would want to crawl into my lap was when she was sick and I’m not talking head cold. I’m talking stomach flu sick. Draping an old bedsheet over my lap and holding a bucket was a small tradeoff, though, to feel her snuggling against me. Even when she was a teen, she’d want me close by to rub her back as she hunched over the toilet. I’d still do it today if she asked me. You take your cuddles where you can.

Most people, if left to their own devices, will wake up at just the right time for their body’s needs. I no longer have to go in to an office every day so technically, I could sleep in and rise whenever I wanted to. What actually happens is that I wake up at 7 a.m. on the dot like clockwork. I have no idea why 7 a.m. is the magic number. I only know that winter or summer, it is still the same. My eyes open at 7 a.m. However, on Sunday, my hubby wakes me up at 6 a.m. to go shower so that we can leave for church on time. Having to get up an hour earlier is torture for me. I’m a groggy mess for those first few minutes. Ugh! I think the world should have to operate on “Dee” time. It would be a much more civilized place, at least for me.

The oven timer always goes off just when you are really getting into something interesting on the computer or in a good book. It never fails. I wish I had a remote to hit to turn that thing off so I could buy a few more minutes with whatever I am engrossed in. On the other hand, perhaps it isn’t such a good idea because I suspect I’d have quite a few burned meals if such a device existed.

  1. LOL about the oven timer — it does do that, doesn’t it? I use the timer on my microwave, which does go off after beeping a few times — and several times I’ve made it back t the oven almost too late!

    7 sounds lovely to me. I have to get up at 5 most days. We have only one shower and five people who need it, and I seem to operate better if I can shower first. Otherwise I’d have to wait til everyone left, then I’d feel like I was getting a late start on the day.

  3. 5 a.m.? Oh my…that’s when my husband gets up. Much too early for me. I completely understand about getting a late start, though. I don’t like to have to wait on everyone else to finish. When they’re all home for the holidays, I like to get up earlier and be showered and ready to go before the rest are stirring.

  4. I agree 100% with #1! In fact, I wish I were in a bookstore right now with a cuppa joe …

    And I use #2 to my advantage in getting this baby weight off (especially since the baby is almost 2).

  5. Our bodies get in to that cyrcadian (sp?) rhythm and we just wake up on our own. Aren’t you glad it’s not 5:30am?

    I see you love to knit! Knitting is always in my top five or ten every week!

  6. Love to knit! But I would be hopeless at 5:30 a.m. even with yarn and needles in my hands.

  7. #2 is a perfect way to control your eating, if you can just slow down enough to remember it before you’ve downed a ton of calories. I was still trying to get baby weight off when my baby was 15.

    Ah yes if I could just learn the law of diminshing returns in relation to eating more than my body needs. Oh and yes I’m craving a hot fudge sundae now….

  9. I’d be craving one, too, except it is in the 20’s here tonight. Think I’ll opt for hot chocolate instead. LOL
